Court Administration for the 13th Judicial Circuit, Hillsborough County and partner agencies identified below are sponsoring a Domestic Violence Summit focusing on the challenges of addressing domestic violence within the criminal justice system and supporting survivors of domestic violence and their children. The Summit will feature Gerald W. Fineman, J.D. from the Training Institute of Strangulation Prevention, a program of the Alliance for HOPE International which also originated the Family Justice Centers model. Mr. Fineman is a national expert on family violence who has been prosecuting domestic violence cases for almost 30 years and teaches Criminal Law and Procedure at California Southern Law School.

He will address the importance of domestic violence prevention; seriousness and lethality of strangulation and suffocation assaults and their link to child abuse, sexual assault and elder abuse; how to conduct thorough investigations in domestic violence cases; system best practices and court considerations; and suggestions for our community to improve its response to domestic violence within the justice system.

The Summit will qualify for four hours of Mandatory Continuing Law Education Units (MCLE) in the area of “domestic violence awareness” for the Florida Bar’s MCLE requirement, or four hours of Continuing Mediator Education Units (CME) or four hours of Domestic Violence Training for Law Enforcement and other professionals.

From 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. there will be a provider Poster Session and network opportunity. Lunch will be provided for participants.
