Dr. Wagoner will summarize various areas of criminal law in which psychiatry and mental illness may play a role, including competence to stand trial, criminal responsibility, sentencing, and competence to be executed. Dr. Wagoner will focus on discussing the insanity defense in the state of Florida and how various psychiatric diagnoses come into play in these cases.


- Situations in which psychiatry and the law intersect.

- The insanity defense and the specific wording of Florida statute.

- Common psychiatric diagnoses which can present in the midst of an insanity case.

- How best to utilize a forensic psychiatrist as an expert in an insanity case.


Ryan C. Wagoner, MD is board certified in both general and forensic psychiatry. He received his undergraduate education and medical degree at the University of Florida. Dr. Wagoner completed his residency training in general psychiatry at Western Psychiatric Institute and Clinic in Pittsburgh, PA and his fellowship training in forensic psychiatry at the University of California, Davis. After completing fellowship, Dr. Wagoner worked for a private inpatient psychiatric hospital and ran a private forensic psychiatry practice. Recently, Dr. Wagoner moved back to the Tampa Bay area and is now the Chief of Forensic Psychiatry at the University of South Florida.
