James E. Tokley, Tampa’s poet laureate, wrote a poem “A Modern Manifesto” in honor of the new Edgecomb Courthouse.  The poem was engraved in a plaque and dedicated on December 3, 2010.  The plaque was placed in the sidewalk in front of Lady Justice where all who entered the courthouse could read Mr. Tokley’s inspiring words.  Ironically, the poem explains why we can see Lady Justice’s eyes clearly through her blindfold.  This plaque was damaged beyond repair by a forklift when the statue was boxed in with wooden scaffolding in preparation for the 2012 Republican National Convention.  Although the plaque has been removed, Mr. Tokley’s words still ring in our hearts and we want to thank him with a special reception.

The plans are to hang a framed copy of the poem in the courthouse lobby following the reception.
